About Blood Dog Training

Blood Dog Training is a division of ABCANTRA (Abney Canine Training), and is dedicated to the training of Blood Trailing Dogs.

Our course is an intensive four week program where your dog is taught to follow the scent of the animal you wish to find. It does not matter whether it's deer, hogs, or people. If you can determine the starting point of your prey, your dog will be able to locate it.

I am the breeder of Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dogs, and many people are of the inclination that only Catahoulas are trained. I believe in this breed and prefer it over others, but that does not mean that other breeds of dog cannot perform the same task. The most popular breeds for tracking are those from the scenting, working, hunting, and herding groups, and do perform better than others, but I have trained breeds from the guardian and companion groups as well.
Breeds that we have successfully trained include, Catahoulas, Labrador Retrievers, Bloodhounds, Hanovarians, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Boerboels, Dachshunds, Beagles, Rottweilers, Black Mouth Curs, Mountain Curs, and a variety of mixed breeds.

We will train your chosen dog for you, or, if you prefer, we will select a puppy from our stock. It is best to make arrangements for training or purchase at least 2 months prior to hunting season. There are steps that must be completed by you in order to understand what your dog is doing when it is tracking. You must learn to read your dog's body language to ensure that he is performing.
Having a dog trained in the spring that will be used to work in the winter is not a problem. It ensures that training is completed prior to your using the dog, and gives you time to work with him. The dog does not need to be worked daily or weekly, but should be reminded of his training on a monthly basis. About two to three weeks prior to the opening season, he should be worked three times each week. This is like a boxer training for a fight. He is getting his stamina back and being reminded of his skills.

Once your dog is trained by us, and returned to you, we will still be here to help you should you experience any problems. When a dog is trained by us, and your fees paid, any questions or problems that you encounter with the dog's tracking will be tended to at no additional cost, for the life of your dog.
